About Us

Beginnings (History)

Cake Angels was established in 2011, when founder Kirsty Bishop-Fox, facilitated some cake decorating workshops in Melbourne. The demonstration cakes were donated to the local Ronald McDonald House and were gratefully received. When the students were told of this, they suggested that they too would like to donate cakes to benefit sick children and suggested making birthday cakes for them. So when a second delivery of demonstration cakes was made, Kirsty discussed the possibility with staff at Ronald McDonald House who, coincidentally, were looking at starting a birthday club for the children they support, and the rest as they say, is history.

When the word got out about what Cake Angels do, cake decorators came to us offering to donate their course cakes or to make cakes by request for seriously ill kids. We quickly realised that this was something that shouldn’t be limited to Melbourne and that we should look to do this Australia wide. As a result in April 2012 our first cakes were donated in Perth, Sydney and Brisbane. Following this cakes have been donated in Adelaide, Tasmania and a number of regional areas throughout Australia.

In August 2012, Australian Cake Angels Network became an Incorporated Association and is now a registered charity.

What we do

Cake Angels helps relieve a family’s stress by donating a beautiful cake to make the day even more special for a seriously ill child and their family. The child may need to be hospitalised on their birthday, the parents may be suffering financially or the family as a whole may have been through so much that a little extra something is warranted. In some cases, a special celebration may be being held, particularly if it’s not expected that the child will survive until their next birthday due to a decline in their condition.

Most of our Cake Angels recipients are referred to us by select charities who support seriously ill kids. These organisations nominate children who are either in hospital, suffering terminal illness, or in the early stages of recovery where every little bit of joy can make all the difference. The families, parents and siblings in particular, will be suffering huge amounts of not only emotional stress, but also financial stress which will often prevent any form of celebration.

Cake Angels is run completely by volunteers, some are hobbyists and some run their own cake decorating business. All have not only a love of baking cakes, but also the desire to support a deserving cause and to make a difference, by bringing a smile to a seriously ill child when we can.

Life threatening and life limiting illness and injury can be devastating and even more so for children. Their innocence and vulnerability make it difficult to comprehend what they are going through. One happy moment which brings a smile to their face, can become their most cherished memory.
